CEREBROVASCULAR ACCIDENT OR STROKE

WHAT IS A STROKE?

A stroke occurs when blood flow is blocked in the arteries that nourish the brain, or when bleeding occurs in the brain itself. Simply put, a stroke is an interruption of blood anywhere in the brain.

WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF A STROKE?

A Cerebrovascular Accident (CVA), or stroke, causes damage to a specific area of the brain. The symptoms resulting from the “brain attack” will depend on the area of the brain that was affected. In other words, the functional consequences of a stroke are directly associated with the region of the brain that was damaged. Occasionally, it is possible that the person that suffered a CVA does not even realize that he/she has suffered cerebral trauma.

Generally, a sudden development of one or more of the following signs and symptoms indicates the onset of a stroke:

  • Numbness or weakness of the face, arms, or legs – especially on one side of the body
  • Confusion, trouble speaking or understanding
  • Changes in vision; sudden trouble seeing in one or both eyes
  • Severe headache with no known cause
  • Slurred speech, inability to speak or understand speech
  • Drooling or difficulty swallowing
  • Loss of memory
  • Vertigo (feeling of dizziness)
  • Loss of balance and coordination
  • Personality changes
  • Mood changes (depression, apathy)
  • Drowsiness, lethargy, or loss of consciousness
  • Uncontrollable eye movements or eyelid drooping
