DEPRESSION

WHAT IS DEPRESSION?

Depression is a pathological state that implies a modification in the brain's biochemistry. This alteration is manifested as a change in the amount or prevalence of neurotransmitters; namely, serotonin, norepinephrine, and dopamine. Heavily concentrated in the Limbic system, these neurotransmitters are usually released in response to rewarding stimuli; however, in a brain suffering from depression, the release of neurotransmitters is drastically altered.

We speak of depression as a mental illness characterized by a melancholy or sadness that lasts more than two weeks and is present constantly day after day. It is usual for the depressed patient to experience profound feelings of grief, despair, and lack of interest in activities that provided pleasure in the past.
