HOW DOES TMS TREAT DEPRESSION?

In the brain there exists a reward system that is compiled of specific structures and neural pathways that respond to positive reinforcement. These regions, collectively referred to as the Limbic System, are activated when we encounter pleasurable stimuli.

The dysfunction of this reward system in our brain is related to the loss of the ability to feel pleasure, as well as prolonged states of depression.

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation as treatment for depression works to stimulate those areas of the brain that are compromised when the brain suffers electrical and chemical alterations during a depressive episode.

One such area is the Nucleus Accumbans- the cerebral region largely responsible for sensations associated with mood- which is stimulated via magnetic coils above the skull. The magnetic fields created by these coils induce small magnetic impulses inside the brain that alter the activity of the neuronal mechanisms, stimulating animation in this section of the brain. Repeated electrical stimulation of the Nucleus Accumbans increases the sensitivity of neural circuits, promotes cerebral activation, and allows for neurons to “recharge” in areas of the brain where circuits were turned off; thereby generating a greater sense of wellness in the patient and freedom from depressive symptoms.

Furthermore, the treatment stimulates neurogenesis, the development of new neural networks, which allows for sustained improvement over time.

HOW LONG IS DOES TREATMENT LAST?

The procedure includes two daily sessions of approximately 30 minutes, each with a 20 minute break in between. This lasts from Monday through Friday for two consecutive weeks. There are twenty sessions in total.

At the end of the two weeks the patient is evaluated again to analyze the results of the therapy. Some patients may need maintenance sessions or continuation of treatment. If that is the case, treatment can be repeated every twelve months depending on the severity of symptoms.

WHAT ARE THE RESULTS OF TREATMENT FOR PEOPLE WITH DEPRESSION?

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation has shown to be superior to the use of antidepressant medication in many cases. Aside having little to no side effects, both the individual and their family notice improvement after the first week of treatment.

Studies have shown that between 70-80% of patients notice drastic improvement in their condition, causing some patients to reduce their drug treatment or stop completely.

HOW DO I APPLY FOR TREATMENT?

The treatment requires an initial evaluation completed by our psychiatrists which collects information regarding symptoms, patient history, and initial diagnosis to determine whether or not treatment is appropriate. WHAT THE TMS TREATMENT INCLUDED?

It´s includes ten days of treatment (two weeks/twenty sessions). For patients who travel from abroad, the price includes airport-hotel transfers as well as transportation to and from the clinic each day of the treatment. Airfare is not included in the cost of treatment.

Those patients who require more than ten days of treatment are charged extra for each additional five days.

The initial evaluation has an extra cost. All prices are listed in US dollars.
